Driving South Africa Forward – with Independent Mechanics

An estimated 80,000 independent mechanics and auto repairers operate across South Africa’s townships. For many communities, these local mechanics are the first and most trusted point of service for vehicle repairs, keeping families mobile and businesses moving.

These mechanics are part of a resilient, self-sustaining network that’s long served from the sidelines – but remains essential to everyday life. South Africa’s automotive industry, contributing 5.2% to South Africa’s GDP, with 3.2% from manufacturing and 2.0% from the retail sector, faces a critical shortage of skilled technicians.

The manufacturing segment of the automotive industry employs roughly 112,000 people across vehicle and component manufacturing, and supports an additional 1.5 million jobs indirectly across the broader economy. The industry’s multiplier effect means that for every job in manufacturing, several more are created in the supply chain and related sectors, leading to a total impact of around 320,000 jobs.

Independent mechanics are a vital part of this value chain. They fill critical service gaps in under-served communities, support local economies, and represent a powerful opportunity for inclusive growth, skills development, and transformation in the broader automotive sector.
